An Generosity of Strangers: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had booked a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at Columbia University – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
